Color of the Year 2021 Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow

What are the design ideas you can do with the colors of the year?

  1. Japanese-style bedroom
  2. Bright yellow bathroom
  3. Contemporary kitchen
  4. Natural stone living room

What better way to start off your home redesign this year, than with Pantone’s Color of the Year for 2021? Luckily for you, you don’t just have to work with a single color. Lovers of DIY interiors and stylistic living will definitely appreciate two colors on their arsenal to experiment on: Ultimate Gray and Illuminating Yellow.

With two completely contrasting colors, it might seem difficult in the beginning to draft a design that you want. However, this is where the hidden charm of these two colors surface — belong to opposite ends of the spectrum, these complementary colors offer you limitless options on styling your interiors or even outdoors. From Japanese-style bedrooms to a bright yellow bathroom, listed below are just some design ideas to get you started with 2021’s Colors of the Year. Continue reading to learn more.

Japanese-Style Bedroom

Japanese-Style Bedroom

The Japanese have long been known to focus on simplicity and elegance. Together, these two elements of design can bring about something wholly unique, despite its more traditional roots. Now, Japanese-inspired rooms have become a facet of modern interior design. There has now been a departure from the typical colors like red, yellow, gold, pink, and brown. Instead, you’ll want to turn your attention towards styling with these gorgeous gray matte tiles from Floor Center.

It’s easy to combine this dark tile color with other design elements that appear more visually-striking or vibrant. To achieve your desired look, you definitely want to add tell-tale elements of Japanese design. Think wooden louvered room dividers and a low platform bed for greater emphasis. If you want to add fixtures, some great choices would be a small side table, or your choice of custom-mounted shelves, giving the appearance of both exquisiteness and simplicity.

Bright Yellow Bathroom

Bright Yellow Bathroom

You’re probably thinking that yellow isn’t necessarily on the list of most popular bathroom colors. While that may be true, this doesn’t mean that you can’t change that fact. It’s all about keeping this simple and making sure that you don’t overuse this bright shade.

If you’re planning to redecorate a bathroom that’s a bit smaller in size compared to the average, then these gorgeous yellow border tiles will be your best friend. For this look, you definitely want to go traditional. Sure you can add your own contemporary flair to it, but the yellow color ultimately works best in the other setting.

Some suggestions would be for you to focus on your bathroom area or the shower room. The yellow border tiles work as an effective contrast against the whitewashed look of the space.

You should also turn your attention towards other fixtures, like your vanity mirrors, lighting, and cabinets. Adding that piece of trimming or flanking your mirror with beautiful sconces lighting might just do the trick.

Contemporary Kitchen

Contemporary Kitchen

Gray is arguably one of the most versatile colors for interior design. While it does have a reputation for being bland, it has made a name for itself alongside metal furniture and light wood elements in the contemporary movement.

Now you’ll have the chance to come up with a lavish-looking kitchen that will no doubt be worthy of landing on the pages of interior design magazines. But to fully commit to this style, you’ll want to stick to certain conventions.

For example, stainless steel kitchen appliances, light wood cabinets, cupboards, and dedicated countertops should highlight your kitchen. For your storage spaces, you can opt for customized shelving, but you could also go with slab cabinet doors that have clean lines and coated metal handles. Make the entire arrangement livelier by adding in your choice of small indoor plants like herbs or aloe vera.

Natural Stone Living Room

For this interior look, you’re challenged with combining the two Colors of The Year to create an effortless design. No, you don’t need to paint your entire wall yellow and your floors gray — instead, try to find accent pieces that come in those colors.

As you may notice from the image, the living room space makes use of a natural stone-look pattern for the flooring and strikes of gray for the walls. Incorporating a simple piece of yellow furniture in the middle will effortlessly make the space pop out.

While you can also find your own yellow furniture, it’s truly up to your preferences on how you want to add that hint of yellow. Why not throw in wall art in there? How about a coffee table with a vibrant yellow centerpiece? There are tons of objects that you can mix and match with. There’s no doubt that they’ll definitely get the job done.

Key Takeaway

Designing with the Color of the Year for 2021 can be a tough challenge. While you might be tempted to just add gray to everything for the Ultimate Gray experience, there’s still the matter of how you can seamlessly integrate Illuminating Yellow.

With this simple guide, however, you’ve discovered a few key tips and tricks on styling with these two colors. Use them to your advantage to come up with a Japanese-inspired space, contemporary kitchen, an aesthetically-appealing bathroom, or even a simple natural stone-look living room.

How Home Design Will Change After COVID-19

How Home Design Will Change After COVID-19

What are the different ways home design will change post-COVID-19?

  1. Emphasis on hygienic building materials
  2. More flexible home layouts
  3. Greater spaces between areas
  4. Requirement for safe outdoor spaces

COVID-19 has affected almost every kind of industry imaginable. You don’t even have to look far to see the effects of the pandemic on most of the economic sectors in the country. Part of this sector is the world of real estate and interior design. There’s no question that home design after COVID-19 will be drastically different from what people have already been accustomed to.

By simply understanding the many implications of the virus on industries, you would also be able to easily imagine the kind of changes and modifications that will be implemented. Two things can be identified as being at the forefront when it comes to post-COVID-19 interior spaces — social distancing and maintenance of proper hygiene. Continue reading to learn more about the many ways home design will be altered after COVID-19.

Emphasis on hygienic building materials

Emphasis on hygienic building materials

After COVID-19 there would likely be a greater emphasis and consideration when it comes to the kind of building materials that are used. In particular, homeowners would likely begin focusing on using easier-to-clean materials and those which do not really require extensive maintenance.

There are many ways for this to be achieved. It can be through something as simple as choosing porcelain or ceramic tiles. Floor Center’s tiles are perfect for this because they not only meet whatever needs you may have, in terms of enhancing appearance, but they’re also not difficult to maintain.

By using these kinds of tiles and building materials of the same nature, you can better guarantee yours, as well as, your family’s safety.

More flexible home layouts

More flexible home layouts

Aside from the utilization of hygienic building materials, many homes that will be built after COVID-19 would prefer the presence of more versatile and flexible home layouts. One cannot underestimate the importance of mental health wellness and physical health wellness — these two are tied together, after all — in coming up with appropriate post-COVID-19 home designs.

Flexible home layouts mean that there would be a construction of more rooms inside a residential space. These rooms are built for the purpose of accommodating a wide variety of activities and simultaneously promoting the need for social distancing. With a higher level of flexibility allotted to each space, there is also more freedom in modifying the function of a particular room.

Greater spaces between areas

Greater spaces between areas

Social distancing is probably one of the most common phrases people may have heard during quarantine. There is a greater need now more than ever to establish spaces as a way of keeping everyone safe from infection or even cross-contamination.

This need for greater spaces would also be reflected in architectural styles after COVID-19. The addition of a larger physical space enables families living inside a house to have a greater breathing room, helping them become more productive and efficient in each of their respective activities as well.

As there is no slowdown in the foreseeable future when it comes to the popularity of work from home setups, ample house spaces provide a key for this.

Requirement for safe outdoor spaces

Requirement for safe outdoor spaces

Authorities have not been stopping short of constantly reminding the public not to go outside. This is, after all, one of the safety measures in giving yourself a better chance of not contracting the virus. However, this isn’t to say that heading outdoors is already a thing of the past — it need only undergo the necessary modifications.

In applying this concept to home design settings, it simply means that more people would likely increase the demand to create safer outdoor spaces for their homes. These outdoor spaces are great in offering homeowners a safer way of enjoying the outdoors, without compromising on their safety. They may experiment on the kind of outdoor space that may want to have for their homes — they may opt for roofed verandas, sturdy backyard decks, a patio, or a gazebo.

Key Takeaway

Home design after COVID-19 may put more emphasis on sanitation and livable breathing space. Depending on the preference of future homeowners, architects may make a variety of suggestions to accommodate these home designs.

Changes in home design, however, are not only limited to the ones which have already been written above — as the virus continues impacting the architectural/home design sector, many more COVID-19 friendly home innovations will eventually flourish. How to Use Mosaic Tiles to Elevate Your Home Design

[30x30] WP3303_

How can you install and apply mosaic tiles into your home design?

  1. Prepare
  2. Mark Layout Lines
  3. Begin Installation
  4. Apply Grout
  5. Install A Backsplash

Mosaic tiles can easily make any home design more special. If you’ve been wanting to upgrade your home, this is the perfect weekend or holiday project. Add more style per square inch by creatively using mosaic tiles for any part of your home. If you’re curious about how to install and incorporate mosaic tiles into your home design, here are the steps you need to follow.

How to Install Mosaic Tiles

Visual interest is always recommended if you want to create a well-designed living space. You can use mosaic tiles in any part of your home because they come in a variety of different finishes that can create various intricate effects. It’s an instant visual upgrade you need to try out. Previously, you would have to manually cut and place the mosaic design yourself. Modern mosaic tiles are much easier to install. To install mosaic tiles, you need to do the following:

Prepare

shutterstock_573685309

You need to prepare your materials and the surface. It’s similar to installing ceramic tiles. A good installation surface starts with a smooth surface. If you plan to create an underlay, you can use a cement board which is applied directly over your plywood subfloor. This under-layer is great for surfaces that tend to get damp easily, such as your kitchen area, pool area, and bathroom. Areas that stay dry generally don’t require an under-layer. Skip this step if you’re installing your tile elsewhere.

Mark Layout Lines

Test-fitting your tiles should be done before installation. After test fitting, you can prepare your layout lines. The most effective method is the quarter method. Divide the space into four quarters. Use a tape measure to mark the midpoint of the wall or floor. Use chalk to create intersecting lines. You should have a square cross at this point.

Make a point 4 feet from the center of one of your lines. Mark a point 3 feet from the center on the intersecting line. The diagonal line from the two points should have a total measurement of 5 feet and 90 degrees. If your results are different, adjust your lines accordingly until you get the right results.

Begin Installation

shutterstock_1028132779

Once your layout lines are created, use a trowel and thin-set adhesive. Spread the adhesive evenly per quadrant. Apply enough but not too thick that you don’t see the under-layer.

Proceed to apply one sheet of mosaic tile on one corner of the quadrant. When you’re adjusting the tile, you may use your hands but remember to be careful. Make sure that the tiles are set perfectly within the square. Press firmly for several seconds and make sure that you don’t slide the tile when you release your hand.

Continue to install the other tiles in the same manner. Use tile spacers in between each tile to ensure that the spaces are uniform. Work your way outwards until all quadrants are completely covered.

Tile Setting

Tile Setting

Did you know that mosaic tiles can ripple or form waves on the surface? You can avoid this by taking a rubber mallet and a small piece of plywood. Place the plywood on top of the tile and gently tap the mallet to set it in place. Pay extra attention to the seams of each tile. This can prevent uneven surfaces and uneven gaps.

Grout

Grout

The mosaic tiles are now dry and hardened into the thin-set. What do you need to do next? Grout is needed to tie everything together and to seal everything in. Mix your grout according to the instructions. Use a grout float to spread the grout over the tiles evenly. Use the grout float to make multiple passes. This allows the grout to spread over the joints properly.

Continue this process until all the joints are filled in evenly. If there is excess grout, use the grout float to scrape it away. Let the grout harden slightly then wipe the excess with a clean cloth. Use a liquid grout haze remover to remove the remaining grout once it’s fully cured.

Install a Backsplash

Backsplashes are an instant fix to create interest in any part of your home. You can use a backsplash for your patio, foyer, and more. If you’re cutting your mosaic tiles or installing pre-made tiles, you can easily create a backsplash.

How to Incorporate Colorful Tiles into Your Home Design

How to Incorporate Colorful Tiles into Your Home Design

How can you use colorful tiles at home?

  1. Floor Application
  2. Accent Wall Application
  3. Artistic Application
  4. Cleaning Dirty Grout

How can you use colorful tiles at home and how do you clean dirty grout? Dirty grout and colored tiles are not a good combination. You may find that your grout stands out more when you’re using colored tiles. Your attention is immediately drawn to the color and the next thing you’ll see is the dirt. This is very easy to do. You just need to dedicate some time off to be able to plan your new tile flooring and grout cleaning. This process is not an anything-goes situation. You need to prepare so you can properly execute the effect you want. Here’s how you can use colorful tiles at home and how to clean the excess grout for them.

Floor Application

Floor Application

60×60 Slate

Floor application can get a bit complicated. It depends on the design you want to go for. If you go too bright for your tiles, you can end up with a gaudy-looking floor design. You need to find balance. Try using neutral tiles with brights and accents. This can bring the balance you need without sacrificing the pop of color you desire to put. Try out this tile from Floor Center. The 60×60 Lithos collection has a matte/rustic tile called Abstract (ML06-7). It’s a combination of cool tones such as a subdued cerulean and a neutral gray. You can take out the guesswork for your tile designs.

If you’re into natural textures, there’s another tile design from the 60×60 Slate collection that is a rustic tile with a lapis lazuli color and gold veining. It’s an elegant, rustic, marble-like tile that can fit your foyer or kitchen. You can even use it to accent certain areas of your living room. The possibilities are endless when you’re dealing with floor applications for your tiles.

Accent Wall Application

Accent Wall Application

40×40 Strata

Accent wall application isn’t as complicated as floor application. If you have a base already present, which can be neutral or earth tone, you can readily incorporate the pop of color you need to bring your room to life. This is especially great for bathrooms.

How do you accent a matte tile? You will need to use a contrasting color or pattern. Blues can pop out when paired with a warm or earth tone color. One tile you can use to create your accent wall is from the 40×40 Strata collection. Creme (S425) is a glossy tile with an earthy baby blue tone and geometric pattern. It combines the best of both worlds. It also has the color and pattern you need to create a unique accent wall.

Accent walls are not limited to bathrooms. You may even use it for your swimming pool. If your pool is using the Blanc (01-0) tile of the glossy 30×30 Aura collection, you can pair it with Blue (170T) from the same collection. Then for the floor of your pool, you can use Azul (WP3303) which is a tile from the 30×30 Montage collection.

Artistic Application

Artistic Application

20×20 Chroma

Artistic applications are where you get to be creative but also careful. You can create different patterns for your surfaces and flooring. Take inspiration from the 20×20 Chroma collection by Floor Center.

This glossy tile collection includes a variety of colors that can help you create unique patterns and symbols for your surfaces, flooring, and more. You can create a pop art surface or flooring that can instantly bring attention to your room.

Cleaning Dirty Grout

shutterstock_64119958

Cleaning dirty grout is easy. Clean grout is the secret to clean-looking tiles for all of your rooms. Porous grout is bound to absorb dirt and spills. It’s important to clean them when you can. To preserve the integrity of the designs and accents you created above, wipe down the grout with hot water and apply a cleaning solution on the grout and leave it on as instructed on the packaging.
